“Salman has been growing potatoes, tomatoes and pumpkins without using any kind of artificial fertilisers…" the source told TOI.
The superstar made the decision to grow his own vegetables, as he believed that many of the fruits and veggies sold at the supermarket are laced with chemicals and can be detrimental to our health. However, his farm’s produce is strictly meant for domestic consumption and not as a side hustle.
The star’s father, Salim Khan, also confirmed that the family has no plans on selling the produce from his farm to the market.
“I’ve never seen Salman so passionate about anything. He’s really given his heart and soul to the farm,” he told TOI. “He loves spending time there, being at one with nature. And yes, we have no plans to sell the output commercially. It’s just an initiative towards a healthy life,” he added.
A Side Effect Of Growing Vegetables With Artificial Fertilisers? You Get Almost No Nutritional Value
An article on the BBC reported that the nutritional value of vegetables had declined, and one of the major reasons for this decline was the use of artificial fertilisers. Important nutrients in some garden crops are up to 38% lower now than they were in the middle of the 20th century, according to a 2004 US study. Phosphorus decreased by 9%, iron by 15%, and calcium by 16% on average among the 43 vegetables examined. Ascorbic acid and riboflavin levels both sharply decreased, although protein levels only slightly decreased.In order to increase food production, scientists created new high-yield crop and livestock breeds as well as synthetic fertilisers, insecticides, and herbicides in response to the post-World War II food shortages. Crop productivity rose sharply in tandem with advancements in irrigation and the introduction of reasonably priced tractors. Between 1961 and 2014, the average global cereal yield increased by 175%. For instance, wheat's average production increased from 1.1 tonnes per hectare to 3.4 tonnes per hectare during the same period.
While yields increased, some crops' nutritional levels decreased, raising concerns about intensive agricultural practices.
