Who is the bigger star between Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor? ‘Saiyaara’ director Mohit Suri went all out in defense of his ‘Aashiqui 2’ leading lady at a recent interview. In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, the filmmaker was asked if he agreed that Shraddha’s popularity among audience is behind Alia and her husband, ‘Animal’ star Ranbir Kapoor. Suri was quick to point out that Shraddha is a beloved star in her own right and, even after more than a decade, still holds sway in people’s hearts as ‘Arohi’ (her character from ‘Aashiqui 2’.)
“I think Shraddha has seen some level of stardom. I don’t know what that means, but Shraddha’s stardom is insane. Even till today, if she goes somewhere, people start shouting Aarohi (her character’s name from Aashiqui 2), and it doesn’t matter how many films she does. I don’t pretend to say that I know what it takes to become a star, but I know what is right for my film, and I do that,” he said.
For the unversed, ‘Saiyaara,’ which stars newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has been touted as a spiritual sequel of sorts to ‘Aashiqui 2.’ ‘Saiyaara’ has emerged as a box-office juggernaut and has earned Rs 275 crore domestically.
Shraddha Kapoor’s rise in the film industry accelerated following the phenomenal success of Aashiqui 2. Building on that momentum, she reaffirmed her acting prowess through the Stree franchise. Her latest installment, Stree 2, turned out to be a colossal global hit, earning an impressive Rs 857.15 crore across the world.
At an event, the ‘Stree 2’ actress acknowledged the role ‘Aashiqui 2’ played in catapulting her to overnight stardom. “Aarohi came into my life and changed everything. I am forever grateful and thankful to each and everyone who gave so much love to me as Aarohi. People remember the film, the songs, and the story, even after so many years. I would like to also thank Mohit Suri sir for giving me this character and an opportunity of a lifetime. It will always stay with me.”
