Saif Ali Khan, Amrita Singh’s wedding left 15-year-old Saba and young Soha in shock as they were still in school. How the sisters learned about it?

Saif Ali Khan was 21 when he married actor Amrita Singh, who was 33 at the time. The couple remained married for 13 years before separating and eventually getting divorced in 2004. Decades later, Saif’s sister, Saba Pataudi has opened up about how young they were when the wedding took place and how they first learned about it.

In a recent conversation with Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi, Saba recalled that both she and Soha were still in school when Saif got married. Saba was just 15, while Soha was 13. The sisters said the wedding came as a surprise to them, with news of it reaching them through school and the media. They were also asked by their parents not to discuss the marriage with others at the time.

Talking about Saif’s wedding, Saba recalled that the sisters were very young and had little idea about what was happening. She said they were called to the principal’s office after the marriage became public through newspaper reports.


According to Saba, "We got a call in the principal’s office from the parents saying you won’t tell anyone anything. We don’t know how real the news is because it was in the newspapers by then. So we were told that we shouldn’t tell anyone."



Soha recalled a different detail about how she found out. She said her French teacher was the one who told her about the marriage. She also described the wedding as something that happened at the last minute.

Saif and Amrita’s private wedding

Saif and Amrita’s wedding was reportedly a small and spontaneous affair. Details about the ceremony have previously been shared by designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, who were closely associated with the couple at the time.

In an earlier conversation with Namrata Zakaria, the designers revealed that they were present at the wedding and even signed the nikaahnama as witnesses. According to their account, Saif was keen to get married while Amrita was initially unsure.

The designers recalled that the couple had been together for several months before deciding to take the step. The wedding was arranged quickly, leaving little time for elaborate preparations.

Amrita reportedly got ready with whatever was available, while Saif wore a bandhgala. A maulvi and a pandit were called for the ceremony. During the nikaah, the designers also recalled an amusing moment when Amrita was asked for a name beginning with the letter 'A'. The name “Aziza” was suggested during the ceremony.

What happened after Saif and Amrita’s marriage?

For the unversed, Saif and Amrita remained together for 13 years before their marriage ended in divorce in 2004. The couple have two children, actor Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan.

Despite their eventual separation, both Saif and Amrita have spoken about their relationship and family at different points over the years. Saif later married actor Kareena Kapoor in 2012, and they have two sons, Taimur and Jeh.

Amrita, meanwhile, did not remarry.

Saif’s mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, has also previously spoken about how she reacted when she learned that her son had secretly married Amrita. In an earlier appearance on Koffee with Karan, Saif recalled telling his mother about the marriage only after it had already happened.

According to Saif, Sharmila was supportive but was deeply hurt that he had not told her beforehand. He recalled that she had asked him not to get married at the time, only to learn from him that the wedding had already taken place.
