'Safety is never a joke.' Mumbai Police gives a befitting reply to stand-up comedian's 'seatbelt' tweet

Mumbai Police on Wednesday reminded stand-up comedian Atul Khatri that safety "is never a joke" after he made light of the seatbelt rule which came into effect in Mumbai from November 1.

Khatri took to Twitter to share a picture of a model flaunting a t-shirt with a seatbelt printed on it. "Mumbaikars! Please wear seat belts from today or buy this t-shirt," the caption next to the picture read.

The official Twitter handle of Mumbai Police, which is pretty active on the micro-blogging platform and keeps sharing memes with its 4.9 million followers, was quick to notice Khatri's tweet. In response to Khatri's joke, Mumbai Police replied saying that the cops will keep such t-shirts in stock for you, along with the challan for not wearing the actual seatbelt.


"We shall keep them in stock for you, along with our challans. Your safety is never a joke!" Mumbai Police replied, adding that if this joke is ever used during a stand-up routine, then the comedian should ensure to add a message of safety for the audience.
The comedian laughed off Mumbai Police’s quirky response to his joke and replied with “Hahaha. Noted Sir.”

The Mumbai Police had last month issued a notification saying it will be mandatory for the driver and co-passengers to wear seat belts from 1st November.

The traffic police have been directed to take action against the drivers not wearing seat belts, the official said, adding that they will issue warnings to the passengers of four-wheelers which do not have rear seat belts. Police will ask the owners of such cars to install the rear seat belts, he said.

As per provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, whosoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers not wearing seat belts shall be punished.
