Russell Brand reached the Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday as a trial that could last several weeks has started. The British comedian and actor, who has denied any wrongdoing, now faces a series of allegations that will be examined in court as prosecutors prepare to present their case.

Brand arrived wearing a grey suit and sunglasses, accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher, and security guards. According to the Associated Press (AP), the trial could last between 10 and 12 weeks. The first day of the trial will be about selecting the jury and other preliminary proceedings.

Brand faces seven charges in total which involve three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The allegations have been made by six women and these alleged incidents are said to have occurred over a decade from 1999 to 2009, according to AP.


According to the Associated Press, prosecutors have previously outlined several allegations during court hearings. These include an accusation that Brand raped a woman in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference, allegedly grabbed a television worker’s breasts and forced her into a sexual act in a toilet, and kissed and groped a worker at a radio station.

Brand has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to every charge. The trial will examine the evidence before the court, and the jury will determine the outcome.

How did the investigation begin?

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the investigation started after allegations were reported by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times. Detectives began investigating in September 2023 after receiving several complaints.

The reporting by these publication brought attention to Brand’s conduct during the years when he was a prominent figure in British television, radio and comedy. One woman told Dispatches that she had entered a relationship with Brand when she was 16 and he was 31. She described the relationship as emotionally abusive and controlling.

Other allegations reported by the publications concerned incidents said to have occurred during Brand’s career in entertainment.

Brand has repeatedly denied engaging in non-consensual sexual activity. In a video shared on social media last year, he said, “I’ve never engaged in nonconsensual activity. I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.”

Since the allegations emerged, Brand has also spoken publicly about his Christian faith following his baptism. In recent years, he has moved away from mainstream entertainment towards online videos covering religion, wellness and free speech.
