Rudolf Weigl: Google celebrates 138th birthday of Polish immunologist with a doodle

Today's Google Doodle is dedicated to a Polish biologist, immunologist Rudolf Weigl. Honoured with two Nobel awards, Weigl produced the first-ever effective vaccine against epidemic typhus. Epidemic Typhus was the oldest and extremely infectious disease of that time. Body lice were known carriers of typhus-infecting bacteria Rickettsia prowazekii. The doodle shows Weigl holding a test tube with drawings of lice around him since the insect was considered the carrier of the deadly disease.
