For many Indians, moving abroad is often seen as a pathway to better career opportunities, higher salaries, improved quality of life, and greater work-life balance. From pursuing global education to building successful careers in countries like Sweden, Canada, the US, or Australia, the dream of settling overseas continues to attract professionals seeking personal and financial growth. While better income and lifestyle are major driving factors, many also look for cleaner environments, stronger social security, and more balanced working cultures. Now, a Chennai-based woman, living in Sweden, has painted a sharp contrast between the two countries.

Cost of living in India

In her Instagram post, the woman shared what it is like living in India vs Sweden for a family of 3. She revealed that in India, a family earning Rs 40 lakh per annum typically takes home around Rs 2.28 lakh to Rs 2.35 lakh per month while monthly expenses can include Rs 15,000 to Rs 35,000 for a 2BHK apartment in metro cities.

Meanwhile, Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 are typically spent on groceries, transport costs range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 15,000 depending on public or private travel, and an additional amount of Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 is allocated to utilities. Dining out costs approximately Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, while insurance expenses range from Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,000, and childcare may cost between Rs 15,000 and Rs 35,000.

Rent for a 2BHK apartment can range from 10,000 to 14,000 SEK in mid-sized cities, or 14,000 to 19,000 SEK in Stockholm.
