Every year, several young professionals relocate to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai, drawn by lucrative paychecks, thriving industries, and career opportunities. However, the high cost of living, driven by steep rents, transportation fees, and soaring daily lifestyle inflation, often ends up burning a hole in their pockets. Along similar lines, Bengaluru resident Priya recently shared a post on X, breaking down the cost of living in the city and revealing why it is so difficult to be financially responsible.

Bengaluru woman on living costs

Priya, in her post, stated that she lives in Indiranagar and spends a whopping Rs 78,500 every month on her lifestyle. While the figure may seem steep at first glance, she went on to break down exactly where her money goes, from rent and groceries to fitness, transportation, and pet care.

According to her monthly expense list, Priya pays Rs 25,000 as rent, while maid and cooking services cost her another Rs 6,500. Her grocery bill comes to Rs 10,000 a month, followed by Rs 6,000 spent on gym membership. Priya also spends Rs 5,000 on supplements.

Bengaluru woman on financial responsibility

Meanwhile, Priya claimed that eating out accounts for another Rs 7,000 every month, while petrol costs her Rs 8,000. Internet and subscriptions add Rs 1,000 to the bill, while miscellaneous expenses amount to Rs 5,000. Priya’s dog-related expenses make up the remaining Rs 5,000.

Adding up all these expenses, Priya’s monthly spending comes to a total of Rs 78,500. Despite what she described as an attempt to remain financially responsible, the Bengaluru resident admitted that living in Indiranagar comes with its own set of costs, joking that ‘Indiranagar has its own tax system.’

Another Bengaluru resident faces similar challenges

Previously, Shivank Goel, a product manager who recently moved to Bengaluru, highlighted a similar situation. Shivank, in his X post, bluntly stated that Bengaluru can become financially demanding for employees earning below Rs 1 lakh a month.

According to Shivank’s experience, the city’s social life primarily revolves around overspending, with cafes, events, and subscription-based hobbies becoming regular affairs. Even routine housing costs can be steep, with security deposits of around Rs 2 lakh being treated as normal.
