As adults, we are always on the lookout for lucrative job offers, a well-paying salary, and a better lifestyle. That’s why many professionals leave their hometowns and move to metro cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad for a comfortable living, allowing them to connect and network with other people and climb the ladder of success. However, the reality of living in such urban spaces can sometimes be a challenge to these aspirations. Recently, an IT professional faced with a similar dilemma got a reality check from Reddit users.

Techie weighs a lucrative Bengaluru job offer

The IT professional, with 3.5 years of experience, shared a post on Reddit revealing that he was considering moving to Bengaluru for work but before making the big move, he wanted to weigh out the pros and cons. So, the techie asked Reddit for suggestions.

The techie shared that the Bengaluru company was willing to give him an annual salary package of Rs 13.5 LPA a significant jump from his current Rs 9.36 LPA salary. At the same time, he was expecting a 10% appraisal expected around October.

Techie’s real reason for wanting to move to Bengaluru

‘I have got an offer in HSR Layout’, the IT expert noted, adding that he has a variable of Rs 50,000 with an in-hand income of Rs 1.045L/month. Although the Redditor admitted that he was excited to shift to Silicon Valley, he was nervous about whether his income was enough to sustain him in the city, considering rent, food, utilities, transport, gym and other social expenses.

The techie, however, pointed out that the real reason he wants to move is because of his current lifestyle that leaves him no room to pursue his hobbies and interests. ‘

Techie feels Bengaluru will give him a fresh start

My day is basically 7:30 AM–8 PM between travel and work, leaving almost no time for gym, hobbies, or social life,’ he wrote, adding that most of his friends have moved abroad and, being an introvert, it was difficult for him to make new friends.

The IT professional added that Bengaluru feels like a ‘fresh start’ to him wth more opportunities for communities, activities, and meeting people. He was hopeful to have a life outside work in the city. ‘But I’m worried I may be romanticising it and underestimating the cost of living,’ he said, concluding his post by asking for suggestions.

Reddit users warn techie

Reddit users jumped to help him, with many of them forbidding the techie from moving to Bengaluru. ‘13.5 is not worth the traffic and the tiredness. You'll be drained by the time u go home,’ warned a user.

‘It’s too little, and Bangalore is expensive. I would advice to look for higher package… for other opportunities or continue with what you have now, you will be better off. Paper calcs on expenditure never work out,’ advised another.
