'RRR' shows no sign of slowing down, producer says 417K footfall in Japan theatres since Oct 2022 release

Director SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' has taken the 'land of the rising sun' by storm.

Since its release on October 21, 2022, the Golden Globe Award-winner has had a fabulous run at the theatres in Japan. The official website of the movie, managed by its makers, announced on Monday that the film recorded a massive footfall of 417,006 (as on Sunday, January 22).

The movie was released in Dolby Japan theatres on January 20 for a week, which added to footfall. On the release day (January 20), Dolby Japan recorded a footfall of 7,181, followed by 14,102 on January 21 and 15,733 on January 22.


The makers also said that the IMAX theatres also increased the number of screens across the Asian country.

"The weekend that made us the happiest since 'RRR' release at the Japanese box-office," the tweet read.


According to a Variety report, the official distributor in Japan, Keizo Kabata's Twin Co Ltd, released Rajamouli's magnum opus on 209 screens and 31 Imax screens across 44 cities and prefectures in the country. Rajamouli, Ram Charan and NTR Jr were also on a promotional trip for the film to the country.

Twin reported a collection of JPY73 million ($495,000) in a week, making it the highest first-week collection for an Indian film in Japan. 'RRR' became the highest-grossing and most preferred foreign film that week beating 'Jurassic World Dominion', 'Spencer' (based on Princess Diana) and 'The Bad Guys'.



This is not the first time Rajamouli's blockbuster was loved and lauded in Japan.

The film-maker's 2017 blockbuster 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' was released in Japan and across the globe in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam simultaneously early this year. The film received a huge response in the country.

This year, 'RR' took home several international awards. Music composer MM Keeravani's 'Naatu Naatu' won the Golden Globe Award in the 'Best Original Song-Motion Picture' category. It also bagged two Critics' Choice Award for Best Song for its track 'Naatu Naatu', and Best Foreign Language Film.
