A day after Boris Johnson resigned, Rishi Sunak announced on Friday that he wanted to lead the nation as the Prime Minister of Britain.

On Tuesday, the senior-most British Indian ever to hold the high office of UK Chancellor of the Exchequer ended his ministerial run and declared that he will no longer continue under Johnson's leadership.

Since his resignation as chancellor, Sunak - who is being considered a strong would-be successor - has kept a low profile. To get a glimpse of the ex-chancellor after an eventful week, journalists stationed themselves outside Sunak's London flat for hours.

As a gesture of humanity and hospitality, Sunak's wife Akshata Murty treated the shutterbugs with a tray of tea and biscuits. She hastily left the tea tray on a temporary table and went back inside.
While people lauded Murty for her warm gesture, what caught people's attention were the expensive cups. The maker, designer Emma Lacey, confirmed on Twitter that those were the cups from her 'The Everyday Mug Range' that is available in 20 colour variants. The retail price of these cups is £38 each (approximately Rs 3,625 each).

"Not sure how to feel about all this, but they (Sunaks) do have good taste in tableware," the post read.

After the news broke, the netizens were in disbelief. Comments, messages and memes started flooding in on Twitter.

While some people found the 42-year-old's gesture 'tone-deaf', others jumped to her defence. Many Indians praised her for 'good values'.

Some curious users also enquired about the Labrador print cups. The Yellow Labrador 1/2 Pint Mugs by British ceramics manufacturing company Emma Bridgewater are priced at £22 each (approximately Rs 2,100).

From discussing the quality of the tea served to not having matching cups, netizens had a lot to discuss.

Sunak was made finance minister in early 2020 and was praised for a COVID-19 economic rescue package, including a costly jobs retention programme that averted mass unemployment.

But he later faced criticism for not giving enough cost-of-living support to households. Revelations this year about his wealthy wife's non-domiciled tax status and a fine he received for breaking COVID lockdown rules have damaged his standing.

His tax-and-spend budget last year put Britain on course for its biggest tax burden since the 1950s, undermining his claims to favour lower taxes.

Sunak voted to leave the EU in 2016.
