Rihanna is known around the world for her music, beauty empire and headline-making performances. But behind the global superstar’s success is a philanthropic mission that began with a deeply personal loss. In 2012, after her grandmother died from complications related to cancer, the Barbadian singer founded the Clara Lionel Foundation in her honour.

Fourteen years later, the organisation has channelled more than $100 million in grants towards communities facing challenges ranging from healthcare inequality to climate disasters. The foundation, named after Rihanna’s grandparents Clara and Lionel, has grown from a personal tribute into an international philanthropic operation working across the Caribbean, East Africa and the southern United States. Its approach increasingly focuses not only on responding to crises, but also on helping communities prepare for them.

How Rihanna Turned Her Grandmother’s Death Into A Mission

Rihanna established the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012 following her grandmother’s death from cancer-related complications. One of its first projects was in Barbados, where the singer helped fund a new radiotherapy machine for the hospital that had treated her grandmother. The foundation started out focusing on health care in Barbados and then branched out to other areas and issues, the Associated Press reported. Its evolution reflects a shift from addressing immediate medical needs to tackling broader challenges affecting vulnerable communities.

The foundation’s name honours both of Rihanna’s grandparents, making its work a lasting tribute to her family. What began as a response to grief has since developed into a long-term commitment to improving access to resources and opportunities.

Rihanna’s Foundation Has Given More Than $100 Million

The Clara Lionel Foundation says it has distributed more than $100 million in grants since 2012 and mobilised billions of dollars towards causes aligned with its mission. Its current work is organised around five pillars: climate solutions, women’s entrepreneurship, arts and culture, health access and equity, and future generations.

The foundation also says all its grantee organisations are community-led, reflecting its emphasis on supporting people who understand the needs of the places where they work. In a 2025 report, the organisation highlighted its support for community groups responding to the Los Angeles wildfires and its continuing investment in Caribbean hurricane recovery. It also reported investing $4.8 million across 38 grantee partners in 2025, with those partners reaching 5.2 million people.

The figures illustrate how the foundation combines direct grantmaking with partnerships intended to extend the impact of its funding.

From Pandemic Relief To Preparing Communities For Disasters

The foundation’s work has become particularly visible during major emergencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it distributed more than $33 million in a single year, according to TIME’s 2026 profile of Rihanna for its TIME100 Philanthropy list. It has also invested in disaster preparedness. Following devastating hurricane seasons in the Caribbean, the foundation began supporting health clinics in 2018 to strengthen their infrastructure and equip them with solar power, helping them remain operational when storms disrupt essential services.

Most recently, it launched the Rebuild & Reimagine Fund in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean in late 2025. The initiative focuses on health access, water security and resilient education infrastructure, including schools designed to withstand severe storms and serve as community shelters. These projects reflect an important distinction in the foundation’s strategy: helping communities withstand the next emergency, rather than relying solely on aid after disaster strikes.

Rihanna’s Philanthropy Is More Than Celebrity Donations

In an April 2025 report, the Associated Press described the Clara Lionel Foundation’s approach as a model for celebrity philanthropy, highlighting its use of flexible funding that allows community organisations to decide how best to meet local needs. Nick Tilsen, founder of the Indigenous-led NDN Collective, praised the foundation for allowing his organisation to work on its own terms. “They support. They see the work. They allow us to do what we need to do,” he told the AP.

Rihanna’s 2012 Mission Continues To Grow

Fourteen years after Rihanna turned personal grief into a charitable mission, the Clara Lionel Foundation has expanded far beyond its beginnings in Barbados. Its work now spans healthcare, climate resilience, education, cultural preservation and economic opportunities for women. The singer’s legacy is not limited to the records she has released or the businesses she has built. Through the foundation, a family loss has become a sustained effort to help communities prepare for uncertainty and shape their own futures.
