Right of refusal: Bride dumps the groom, marries a guest at wedding
"Revenge," said a sage soul, "is an act of passion; vengeance of justice." But what if both of these come together and that too in the form of a woman in a deeply patriarchal society? That, it seems, can make for both a comprehensive rejection of things unpleasant as well indicate a changing pattern in how women place themselves in society. Note, for example, the not-so-distant example of the lady who walked out of her husband's home because she felt the toilet facilities to be, well, a bit lacking. That example is now being broadcast as a worthy one in the 'Swachh Bharat', or 'Clean India', campaign.

Now comes another example where a lady from Rampur married a guest at her wedding ceremony instead of the intended groom.

It seems that the chap had a bit of a medical history, and had an epileptic fit just as he was about to garland the lady. Upset that she hadn't been told about this, the bride announced she'd marry a guest instead, who, in turn, seemed quite willing. A bit of a free-for-all ensued with spoons and plates being thrown around as the two parties fought it out. The matter, it seems, was later amicably resolved. But this begs the question: should Indians take up the practice of prenups? That might prevent some suchlike drama but, then again, what would India be without a daily dose of the dramatic?
