Retro OTT release: Where to watch Tamil star Suriya’s romantic action drama online?

After a mixed reception at the box office, Retro, the Tamil romantic action drama headlined by Suriya and Pooja Hegde, is gearing up for its OTT debut. The Karthik Subbaraj directorial, which hit theaters on May 1, 2025, is now expected to begin streaming on Netflix starting June 5, 2025, as per OTT Play. While neither the filmmakers nor Netflix have officially confirmed the date, multiple reports suggest that the streaming giant has secured post-theatrical digital rights and will offer the film in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.

Netflix had previously hinted at Retro's intense narrative in a social media teaser, stating, “A man’s love can move mountains, but his rage? That’s Retro! Retro, coming to Netflix in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada after its theatrical release!” The announcement has generated anticipation among fans awaiting its digital release.

First Collaboration Between Suriya and Karthik Subbaraj

Retro marks the first collaboration between director Karthik Subbaraj and actor Suriya. Subbaraj, known for genre-bending storytelling, initially developed the script with Rajinikanth in mind. He clarified in an interview that despite speculation, the role was never intended for Thalapathy Vijay. “This story was not written for Thalapathy Vijay sir, as being speculated. I wrote this script keeping in mind Thalaivar,” he explained. However, after approaching Suriya, the narrative evolved from an action-centric plot to a love story with emotional depth.

Produced under the banners of 2D Entertainment by Suriya and Jyotika, and Stone Bench Creations, Retro boasts a star-studded ensemble including Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, Prakash Raj, and Shriya Saran in a cameo role. The film’s cinematography is handled by Shreyaas Krishna, editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali, and music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

Plot: A Man Torn Between Love and Legacy

The narrative of Retro centers on Paari Vel, portrayed by Suriya, an orphan raised by a gangster he despises. Hoping to abandon his violent upbringing, Paari plans to start a new life with his partner Rukmini, played by Pooja Hegde. However, circumstances force him back into a world of bloodshed as he becomes the defender of his ancestral island, now under the grip of a tyrannical regime. The film tackles themes of betrayal, destiny, and the eternal conflict between past burdens and future aspirations.

Despite opening alongside HIT 3, starring Nani, Retro garnered a mixed critical response. Nevertheless, the buzz around its digital release remains strong, with many praising the film’s ambitious storytelling and high production values. The combination of romance, action, and a socio-political backdrop has piqued the interest of streaming audiences.
