Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot has arrived in theatres, giving fans a fresh take on the popular horror video game franchise. With the film now on the big screen, attention has already turned to its OTT and digital release. Here’s what to know...

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil OTT release

Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil has finally reached theatres, giving fans of the long-running video game franchise a new take on the horror series. The film opened internationally on September 18, 2026, and is not connected to Paul W.S. Anderson’s earlier Resident Evil movies.

The reboot stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier whose routine delivery takes a terrifying turn when he is asked to transport an unknown package to a hospital in Raccoon City. For viewers already wondering when they can watch the film from home, its digital and OTT release plans can be estimated from Sony Pictures’ recent release pattern.

When will Resident Evil release on digital platforms?

Resident Evil is expected to reach premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms after its theatrical run. Sony has recently followed a roughly four-to-six-week window for several releases before making them available to rent or buy digitally.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, for example, arrived on PVOD about a month after its theatrical release, while the animated film GOAT took around five and a half weeks.

If Resident Evil follows a similar schedule, its digital release could take place in October 2026. One projected window puts the PVOD release between October 20 and October 27, although this has not been confirmed by Sony.

The film is expected to be available to rent or purchase through services including Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV. Prices can vary depending on the platform and country.

When will Resident Evil stream on Netflix?

Netflix is expected to be the first major subscription streaming home for Resident Evil in markets covered by Sony’s first-window agreement with the platform.

Recent Sony releases have generally moved to Netflix around two-and-a-half to three months after their theatrical premieres. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple reached Netflix about two and a half months after its cinema release, while GOAT took slightly more than three months.

Based on those examples, Resident Evil could reach Netflix in December 2026. Another estimate, based on Sony’s roughly 120-day theatrical-to-streaming pattern for many releases, points to January 16, 2027.

For India, a January 2027 Netflix release has been projected as a possibility. However, Netflix and Sony have yet to confirm an exact date.

What is Resident Evil about?

The reboot follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier who is offered double his usual fee to deliver an unknown package to a hospital in Raccoon City.

His journey takes a disturbing turn after he hits an apparently ill woman on a snow-covered road. Bryan then discovers that a deadly virus has escaped from the hospital’s laboratory, causing infected people to undergo horrifying mutations.
