Resident Evi 2026, directed by Zach Cregger has crossed a major box office milestone. The reboot has earned more than $400 million worldwide and set a new record for the long-running horror franchise. It has already surpassed the previous highest-grossing instalment, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, released in 2016. The film's success also marks a career high for Cregger, whose earlier films include Barbarian and Weapons.

Resident Evil crosses $400 million at the worldwide box office

Zach Cregger wanted to stay true to the video games

Cregger is a fan of the Resident Evil video game franchise and approached the film adaptation with one clear aim: to remain authentic to the spirit of the games. Speaking to AFP, the director explained that he wanted the story to feel like playing the games, even though the film follows a new character. Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier whose late-night delivery job from a hospital turns into a nightmare.

To recreate the gaming experience, Cregger used a first-person visual approach, positioning the camera behind Abrams and moving it to follow what his character sees.

He also adapted the games' weapon progression, where the protagonist starts with a pistol before moving on to a shotgun and then a machine gun. Cregger said players would recognise several aspects of the games in the film.

What is Resident Evil about?

Directed by Cregger and written by him alongside Shay Hatten, Resident Evil is the eighth live-action film in the franchise based on Capcom's video games.

The film stars Austin Abrams as Bryan Hodukavich, a medical courier caught in an outbreak of infected monsters in Raccoon City. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser appear in supporting roles.
