In a time when many employees and freelancers feel pressured to work even when unwell, a simple sick-leave conversation has turned into a talking point about empathy and work culture. A WhatsApp exchange between a client and a freelance web designer — later posted on Reddit — has surprised netizens, not because of conflict, but because of how calmly and respectfully the client responded. The supportive tone stood out in an environment where strict deadlines, suspicion, and burnout have become commonplace.

Sick-Leave Message That Started It All

The viral post, shared by a Reddit user, included screenshots of the freelancer informing him that she had come down with viral fever. She expressed guilt for not starting work, explaining that earlier delays caused by celebrations had already pushed the project schedule.

The WhatsApp chat showed the client replying with just two words, “take rest”. He also told her she should simply inform him about health issues, not seek permission, and encouraged her to rest properly. He reminded her that he was not concerned about the contractual deadlines and even suggested she take the entire week to recover if her fever persisted. Later, he checked in again to ask how she was feeling. (All content and messages credited to the Reddit post by user adnuda.)

Reddit Reactions

The comments section quickly filled with mixed emotions. A Reddit user reacted by saying they would love to work under someone like him. Another pointed out that kindness has become so rare in workplaces that such behaviour now feels unusual.

Some joked that they would suspect something was wrong if their manager behaved this gently. Others noted that toxic corporate culture has made basic decency feel suspicious. A user wrote that while supportive managers are appreciated, leniency can sometimes be misused, especially in fast-paced industries.

Responding to these reactions, the original poster said he had experienced people taking advantage of his kindness but saw those situations as lessons. He added that he believes most people are good by default and continues to treat his team and freelancers with trust until proven otherwise.
