An employee's answer to boss who asked for work on weekends for free has taken Reddit by storm
A user on the online platform Reddit recently voiced frustration over a workplace culture that normalizes weekend work. Posting in the Indian Workplace forum, the individual described an incident shortly after joining one of the Big Four firms, where he was assigned to a new project and informed by his manager that weekend availability was expected in order to meet client demands.

According to his account, the manager emphasized that client priorities came above all else and made it clear that working Saturdays and Sundays was not optional. The employee pushed back, explaining that his compensation covered a standard five-day workweek and that weekends were essential for rest and personal time. He also noted that time away from work was necessary for maintaining balance and well-being.

Despite this, the manager insisted that such expectations were standard practice within the team and that previous employees had followed the same routine. Unwilling to compromise on his boundaries, the employee responded that he would prefer to be removed from the assignment rather than accept mandatory weekend work. This response reportedly angered the manager, who then escalated the matter to higher authorities.

"I said you can roll me off from this project," he wrote.

The incident led the employee to question a broader cultural issue—why excessive work hours, particularly weekend labor, are often normalized and even glorified in certain professional environments. He expressed concern that such expectations place undue pressure on employees and blur the line between professional responsibilities and personal life.

The post triggered a wave of reactions from other users, many of whom resonated with his experience. Several commenters encouraged him to remain firm in his stance, arguing that meaningful change would only occur if individuals collectively resisted unhealthy work expectations. Others pointed out that the job market in India often favors employers, making it easier for organizations to impose such demands because there is always someone willing to comply.

At the same time, some users stressed the importance of self-advocacy, emphasizing that personal boundaries must be actively protected. They suggested that while standing firm may carry risks, it can also lead to healthier work conditions or open the door to better opportunities elsewhere.
