When it comes to his ducal wardrobe, Prince Harry has found a fashion formula that works – a white shirt, tailored trousers or jeans and a suit jacket. But the highlight of the formula, the piece that really works for the Duke of Sussex, is an unstructured cotton-linen Ludlow jacket from J. Crew.

Breathable and unconstricting, the £188 ($228 or Rs 16,300) jacket has a nice stretch that makes it easy to pair across both formal and informal occasions. The fabric – a cotton linen blend – also makes it a popular choice for commuting and travelling during the hot summer months as it does not crease easily.

The Duke of Sussex is, reportedly, such a fan of how versatile the jacket can be that he owns it in four easy-to-pair shades – dark grey, navy, deep water and mushroom – and has been spotted wearing it a record 24 times since he met his wife, Meghan Markle.

Depending on the formality of the occasion, the Duke often pairs the jacket with a simple white shirt and dark blue chino trousers or a classic-fit Ludlow suit pant in a matching shade. When he introduced his son Archie to the world, Prince Harry opted for a light grey J. Crew suit.

If you’d like to don the Duke of Sussex’s signature look at your next major formal shindig, cocktail party or just dinner with friends, here are a few pointers to keep in mind.

Dress for the occasion. For an evening cocktail party, opt for an unconstructed blazer and matching trousers in darker hues like navy or dark grey. You can add a pop of colour by wearing a contrasting shirt, tie or a bright pocket square but remember to keep accessories to an absolute minimum.

For a daytime event, opt for a jacket in a neutral shade such as tan, beige or pale blue. Pair it with an open collar shirt in a light hue and dark chinos.

For a more laid-back, approachable vibe, switch the chinos for some regular-fit denims.
