BENGALURU: Natasha Kabra (35), an event professional, dropped the idea of her dream destination wedding to follow in the footsteps of her parents. She tied the knot at the same wedding venue and even stayed at the same suite in Bengaluru as they did. Memories were recreated three decades later.

“Getting married at the same venue as my parents became a special moment for all of us. They relived their memories as I made new ones,” says Kabra. “It brought the family together.”

Nostalgia wedding is the big new trend among millennial couples in Bengaluru. Brides and grooms want to recreate or incorporate elements like the décor, dining menu and the attire from their parents and grandparents weddings these days.

Getting married at the same venue as parents’ is perhaps the most popular way to honour sentiments. Wedding halls in hotels have been witnessing this growing pattern in the past one year.

Kasiviswanatha Muthuraman, director, F&B, at Radisson Blu Atria hotel, says takers of this trend are primarily entrepreneurs, doctors and techies from well-heeled Marwari, Sindhi, Gujarati, Reddy and Vokkaliga families in the city.

“The second generation is coming back to our hotel to get married because their parents tied the knot here. A Sindhi couple added dishes like sweet rice, Sindhi kadhi and lotus stem curry as it was served at their parents’ wedding. Some hire the same photographer. Some ask for specific banquet halls and spots in the hotel to perform the same rituals as well,” says Muthuraman.

If there's one thing that leaves a lasting impression on the minds of weddings guests, it's the food served. However, not everybody gets it right. Delhi-based chef and Indus Culinary director Marut Sikka says usually that's the case at destination weddings. So, if you're set to tie the knot at a luxury destination, Sikka lists out some pointers for the menu:

One of the first thing Sikka cautions is to avoid glassware at beach weddings as people tend to drop them or accidentally fall, thereby making the beach dangerous for guests to walk on. "I would suggest using disposable wares and cutlery like bamboo, degradable paper and some plastics." Going by the chill vibe of the beach, Sikka suggests serving cold foods and street food from across the world like pizzas, frittata, burgers, hotdogs, kebabs and chaat, rather than a formal sit-down dinner.

The open space gives you a chance to keep things interactive — think open-air counters like barbeques, tandoors, grills and stir fries. "I would make everything off the fi re and on to the plate. Everything should lend to drama and an interactive feel," says Sikka. A formal, sitdown meal with beautiful table settings would be ideal here.

Considering the environment there is very sensitive, Sikka recommends simple, clean food that doesn't create a mess. "Opt for a sit-down dinner which creates minimal fuss and mess. Pastas, fondue and Japanese food would lend very well. If you want a buffet, the food can't be very oily and you can't have live counters as the smoke may damage the delicate interiors."

In the past one year, the Taj West End has seen a dozen vintagethemed weddings. Somnath Mukhejee, general manager at the hotel, says, “Vintage-themed weddings with smaller guest lists are becoming popular. References for the set-up from carefully-stored photographs of the parents’ wedding are brought by young couples to incorporate into their wedding décor. Our chefs even reinvent favourites from the parents’ wedding menu.”

Wedding planners in the city too speak of receiving growing number of enquiries for nostalgia weddings. Krutika Mangharam of Canvas Events recently got a request from a bride to recreate her parents’ wedding backdrop in marigold flowers for her mehendi ceremony. The bride was also captured in the same poses as her mother in heirloom-style photographs.

“Vintage and classic are keywords at weddings nowadays. Recreating and incorporating elements from parents’ wedding is one such route. I even see many brides wear their mother’s wedding lehenga or saree,” says Mangharam. “It becomes an emotional moment that makes the wedding even more special,” she adds.
