If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Realme’s first truly wireless in-ear headphones or earbuds -- Buds Air -- look starkly similar to second-generation Apple AirPods.
Highlight: Good connectivity
Get it for: Rs 3,999

Modelled on the popular AirPods, Realme’s first truly wireless earbuds are worth a try.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Realme’s first truly wireless in-ear headphones or earbuds -- Buds Air -- look starkly similar to second-generation Apple AirPods.

It also appears to be a safe bet for the Chinese brand – modelling a new offering on the Apple bestseller and offering it at one third of its price.

Like the AirPods, the Buds Air comes with a wireless charging case that works with Qi-compatible pads. The case is compact and sturdy and has a button and an LED light.

Opening the top of the case and pressing the button is enough to connect Buds Air to any Bluetooth device. And if the device is already paired, you can just open the case and plug in the earbuds.

Also, like the AirPods, the Buds Air support touch gestures that are mostly responsive. The earbuds are powered by R1 – a custom chipset – and have Bluetooth 5.0 and Super Latency Mode (useful to bridge any lag between the device’s visual and the audio output without draining the battery).

Speaking of battery, you can expect three hours of continuous usage from the Buds Air -- a bit less than we expected. This means you have to keep plugging them back in the charging case.

The earbuds’ audio quality is satisfying, considering the low price vis-a-vis premium earbuds. Buds Air are bass-heavy and the vocals come out quite clear. But we did feel the audio lacked in treble -- it wasn’t too sharp.

As for calling quality, no complaints in the volume level. But many a times, the person on the other side complained of too much disturbance at our end.

Overall, for the asking price of nearly Rs 4,000, the Buds Air offer a lot. They also come in black, yellow and white.

You can pick up the earbuds, not so much for the audio quality, but for the “AirPods experience” without burning a hole in your pocket.
