If you’re trimming your beard for the first time by yourself, it’s going to take a trim or two to find the most flattering length. Always start with a higher guard length to be certain that you don’t trim too much away. You can’t undo a too-short style but you can always shorten it on a second pass, if needed.

While growing a beard, it might be tempting to let your beard grow any way it wants but that can give an unkempt look. Trimming loose stray hairs as it grows will not only prevent a disheveled look but it will also help sculpt your beard into its stylized place.

A great way to do this is comb out your beard in the direction it grows before cutting to remove any tangles. If you’re not growing a moustache, trim the hair that grows over the lip area - – this immediately gives the appearance of a neater beard while in the growing stages.

Once you have the ideal length, it’s time to sculpt. You need to know where to draw your beard boundaries. However, getting the lines right can be tricky. Stick to the natural growth pattern around the cheek area.

Try not to cut into too much of the beard hair as this may result in further maintenance as the beard grows. Use points of the ear and nose area to ensure your beard is symmetrical.

One expert recommends that if your sideburns are overgrown, trimming down this area will reduce puffiness around the face. Additionally, trimming the neck area will do wonders for giving you a chiseled jawline. Start from the middle of your neck and work your way out on either side to help with symmetry.
