Satya Niketan tragedy puts student accommodation under scrutiny
Satya Niketan has recently returned to the spotlight for a tragic reason. On September 6, 2026, a five-storey building operating as a boys' paying guest accommodation collapsed in the area. Seven people, including five students and two labourers, lost their lives.According to police, the property was allegedly registered in the name of 75-year-old Urmila Gupta. Her husband, Hariram Gupta, and their son, Mahesh Gupta, were also involved in managing the property. All three were arrested in connection with the case.
Police said the building had been undergoing repair work before the collapse. Investigators are examining issues including work in the basement, accumulated waste and seepage or water-related problems. The property had reportedly been leased to PG operators operating under the name Hostel Daze in August 2025.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about the safety of private PGs that accommodate students around Delhi's major educational institutions. With university hostels unable to accommodate every student who needs a room, many students depend on private paying guest facilities.
The incident has also strengthened calls for tighter regulation of student accommodation, as reported by ANI. Proposed measures include mandatory licensing and verification of PG operators, CCTV cameras, visitor registers and wardens, along with additional security requirements for larger accommodations.
The Supreme Court has also agreed to examine a petition concerning safety audits of student accommodation around colleges and universities in Delhi. For a locality remembered by many students, including Aditi Sharma, the Satya Niketan tragedy has therefore brought a much more serious questions to the forefront.
