‘Rangeela’ director Ram Gopal Varma to make his debut as a politician

Once, he was known for his intense, gripping political dramas, that did not shy away from posing uncomfortable questions. Now, maverick director Ram Gopal Varma has decided to make another debut at the age of 61 - as a politician!

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the ‘Satya’ director revealed that he would be contesting elections in Andhra Pradesh in 2024. “Sudden decision. Am happy to inform you that I am contesting from Pithampura..” he announced. However, he declined to share further details.

Varma’s political debut comes days after the Telugu Desam Party-Bharatiya Janata Party-Jana Sena Party (JSP) alliance declared that Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan was their candidate who would contest elections in Pithampura.

Who Is Ram Gopal Varma?

One of the most iconic directors, Varma is mostly known for his political thrillers and horror films. In Bollywood, he is best known for the romantic drama ‘Rangeela’ as well as the ‘Srakar’ trilogy. He is credited for bringing a dose of realism to movies.

In 2023, Varma hit headlines after some political leaders in Andhra Pradesh lashed out at him as his film ‘Vyooham’ alluded to a lot of corruption that is rampant in the state. The film explored the causes of the death of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. After the movie was released, several politicians demanded his removal from the state.
