Ranbir Kapoor has started writing his first film

Ranbir Kapoor is already thinking about life beyond acting, even as he takes on some of the biggest projects of his career. The Ramayana star has revealed that he wants to shift his focus towards direction and hopes to make his directorial debut within the next two to three years. The actor has also described the coming decade as his “last decade as an actor”, which raises questions about how he sees the future of his film career.

In a recent interview with co-star Sai Pallavi for BBC Asian Network, Ranbir spoke about his interest in direction and why he finds the filmmaking process appealing. The actor revealed that he began writing a screenplay a couple of months ago but has realised how difficult it is to create a story from scratch.

Ranbir Kapoor explains why he wants to become a director

Talking about his experience as a writer, Ranbir said, “I just started writing a script a couple of months back, and it's so hard to create. I have so much respect for writers and creators. ‘How do you create?’”

He added that directing offers a unique creative experience because it allows someone to bring different people together to tell a story. The actor believes directors experience a particularly strong creative high while making films.

Ranbir has not finalised the genre of his first film but has an idea of the kind of cinema he wants to create. Mentioning Life Is Beautiful, It's a Wonderful Life and Rajkumar Hirani's films as his favourites, he said, “I would say like a feel-good family drama.”

“I work only 100-125 days a year; I have a lot of time to write stories,” he said.

The actor then described the coming decade as his “last decade as an actor”, adding that he wants to gradually shift towards direction. However, he clarified that he would continue acting if he remained creatively inspired.

“I'm not looking at it from an audience's lens, trying to predict that they might get bored of me or I'm too old. I'm looking at it through my lens. If I stay inspired, if I'm getting good work, I would 100 per cent do it,” he explained.

Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming films

Before making the transition to direction, Ranbir wants to complete several major projects. He specifically mentioned Brahmastra 2, Animal 2 and Ramayana: Part 2 as films he wants to finish before beginning his directorial venture.
