Rameswaram new Pamban bridge to open soon: 5 reasons it is only second of its kind in the world
India is set to inaugurate its first vertical lift railway sea bridge in Pamban, Rameswaram. Replacing the 1914 British-era bridge, the new structure features an electro-mechanical lift system for improved maritime traffic navigation. Built at a c...
The new bridge’s most remarkable feature is its electro-mechanical vertical lift system, which can raise the central span to a height of 17 meters, offering seamless navigation for maritime traffic while maintaining the functionality of a modern railway bridge.
The 72.5-meter-long central section can be lifted to provide a clear path for ships, making it the first vertical lift railway sea bridge in India and only the second of its kind in the world.
The integration of the lift mechanism with train control systems ensures that operations are automated and efficient, significantly improving traffic flow.
With a single electrified railway track operational now, there is future provision for an additional track, which will help accommodate growing rail traffic.
The bridge consists of 100 spans, each measuring 18.3 meters, and includes a navigational span of 63 meters, which allows for the full horizontal clearance needed for ships to pass through. This is a vast improvement over the old bridge, which only offered a vertical clearance of 1.5 meters, often resulting in seawater splashing on the girders due to high tide levels.

This 2.1-kilometer-long bridge spans the Gulf of Mannar, connecting the Indian mainland with Rameswaram Island, a key pilgrimage destination. The region has long relied on the Pamban bridge for its transportation needs, but the previous structure, which was retrofitted for broad gauge traffic in 2007, had become outdated.
The new bridge not only replaces the old one but also incorporates modern technology to ensure better durability and efficiency in supporting both passenger and freight traffic.
In contrast, the new structure is designed with a navigational air clearance of 22 meters, offering greater protection against environmental wear and tear.
