Sadhguru described the mind as the “manufacturing unit” where this suffering is created.

Suffering can sometimes feel like something that happens to us from the outside, but Sadhguru offers a different perspective. The Indian guru suggests that much of our suffering is created by the way the mind processes experiences, thoughts and emotions. In a blog post, Sadhguru explained how attention naturally follows what we consider important and connected this psychological process to the way suffering is created. His message invites us to examine what occupies our minds.

Sadhguru on how the mind can manufacture suffering

Sadhguru, in his blog, shared one of the tools to stay happy while discussing the relationship between attention, thoughts and emotions. He explained that “your attention naturally flows in the direction of whatever you hold as important.” When a particular thought or emotion becomes important to us, he said, our attention naturally gets drawn towards it.

According to Sadhguru, this is a psychological reality. However, he stressed that it should not necessarily be confused with the reality of existence itself. He then offered his striking observation: “Suffering is not showered upon us, it is manufactured.” Sadhguru described the mind as the “manufacturing unit” where this suffering is created and suggested that it is time to “shut down the manufacturing unit.”

What does Sadhguru’s quote mean?

The quote suggests that while difficult circumstances are a part of life, the mental suffering we experience can often be intensified by our own thoughts and emotional reactions. For example, an unpleasant event may happen, but repeatedly thinking about it, imagining negative outcomes or becoming consumed by an emotion can make the experience feel much larger.

Sadhguru’s point is not necessarily that every painful experience is imaginary or that external problems do not matter. Rather, his message focuses on the role of the mind in creating an additional layer of suffering around what happens. His reference to a “manufacturing unit” is therefore a metaphor for the mind’s ability to continuously produce thoughts and emotions that can keep us trapped in distress.

Why attention matters

Sadhguru’s explanation begins with attention. When something becomes extremely important to us, our thoughts and emotions can start revolving around it. The more attention we give it, the more space it can occupy in our inner world.

This can create a cycle where a thought triggers an emotion, the emotion demands more attention and the additional attention strengthens the original thought. His advice to “shut down the manufacturing unit” can therefore be understood as an invitation to become more conscious of what we repeatedly feed with our attention.

The relevance of Sadhguru’s message today

The idea is particularly relevant in a world where people are constantly exposed to information, opinions and notifications. It is easy to spend hours replaying an argument, worrying about something that has not happened yet or comparing one's life with someone else's. Such thoughts can consume attention even when the original situation is no longer present.

Sadhguru’s message encourages people to notice this process rather than automatically allowing every thought or emotion to take control. The distinction he makes between psychological reality and existential reality is also important. Just because the mind is intensely focused on something does not necessarily mean that the thought represents the entirety of reality.

His observation that “suffering is not showered upon us” places the mind at the centre of his message. Rather than treating every painful thought as an unquestionable reality, he encourages people to examine how their attention, thoughts and emotions shape their experience.
