Who Was David Bowie?

One of the biggest cultural icons in the 20th century, Bowie was an English singer-songwriter. He was born as David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947, in London.

At the age of 15, Bowie took his first steps into the world of music by establishing his debut band, the Konrads, in 1962. The group performed guitar-driven rock-and-roll songs at local youth clubs, community events, and wedding celebrations. Its membership frequently changed over time, with the band featuring anywhere between four and eight musicians depending on the performance.

Not long afterward, Bowie achieved an important milestone in his early career by signing his first individual management agreement with Leslie Conn, who was a business associate of music publisher Dick James. The partnership was expected to help guide his journey in the music industry and create opportunities for greater exposure.

His first official single, "Liza Jane," released under the name Davie Jones with the King Bees, marked the beginning of his recording career. However, despite the enthusiasm surrounding the release, the song failed to attract significant public attention or generate strong sales, making it a commercial disappointment.

His fortunes changed in 1969 when his song Space Oddity climbed into the top five of the UK Singles Chart, marking his first major hit.

Among his most celebrated number-one singles were Fame, Ashes to Ashes, and the iconic collaboration Under Pressure, recorded with the legendary rock band Queen. On 19 March 1970, Bowie married his first wife, Mary Angela Barnett, in Bromley, London. In October 1990, Bowie met Somali-American supermodel Iman, and the two quickly developed a close relationship. They exchanged vows in a private wedding ceremony held in Lausanne on 24 April 1992. Their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones, on 15 August 2000.

Throughout their marriage, Bowie and Iman divided their time mainly between homes in New York City and London. They also owned a luxury apartment in Sydney's Elizabeth Bay as well as the renowned Britannia Bay House on the Caribbean island of Mustique. After Bowie's passing, Iman reflected on their enduring relationship with gratitude, explaining that one of the greatest strengths of their marriage was their ability to support each other while preserving their individual identities and personal independence.
