When asked how she responded to those experiences, she paused and said, “You have to stay true to yourself always, right?”

She also said, “It was important for me to be real.” And she added, “Hopefully, it might be helpful to someone else.”

In The Next Day, she writes about having recurring nightmares toward the end of 2019. She described dreaming about a beautiful house collapsing around her. Later, the dreams changed to a vision of her family standing near a cliff as she fell into the void. She wrote, “As dramatic as it sounds, I knew, in that moment, that I was going to have to make a decision—and that I was going to have to make it by myself."

The separation conversation, she admits, was difficult. “It was one of the scariest conversations I’d have had,” she wrote. She recalled that Bill was “sad and upset” but also “understanding and respectful.”

Her Life Beyond the Foundation

Melinda French Gates co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 and stepped down as co-chair in 2024 after nearly 24 years. According to Forbes, she is now focusing more deeply on her independent philanthropic work, including major funding commitments toward women’s and girls’ rights.

Through Pivotal Ventures, which she founded in 2015, she continues investing in gender equality and closing funding gaps for women founders. Her background includes years at Microsoft, where she worked as General Manager of Information Products before leaving in 1996 to focus on family and philanthropy.
