Denzel Washington on faith, gratitude and humility

Some advice sounds simple until you actually try it. Denzel Washington once suggested a surprisingly practical morning ritual: put your slippers somewhere you cannot easily reach them. The reason? You may have to get down on your knees to pick them up. What follows is more than a quirky routine. It becomes a reminder to pause before the day begins, be grateful for what you have and approach what lies ahead with faith, humility and an open heart.

Denzel Washington's quote on gratitude and faith

The quote of the day is: "I pray that you put your slippers way under the bed tonight, so that when you wake up in the morning you have to get on your knees to reach them. And while you're down there, say thank you for grace, thank you for mercy, thank you for understanding, thank you for wisdom, thank you for parents, thank you for love, thank you for kindness, thank you for humility, thank you for peace, thank you for prosperity. Say thank you in advance for what's already yours."

The powerful words came from Denzel Washington's commencement speech at Dillard University on May 9, 2015. Washington was addressing the graduating class of the historically Black university in New Orleans, Louisiana, when he shared the advice as part of a larger message about faith, success and keeping God at the centre of one's life.

The address is widely known as the "Number One: Put God First" speech. While Washington had already shared a similar version of the "shoes under the bed" analogy in 2014 while backstage with a group of young Broadway actors, the Dillard University speech expanded the idea considerably.

His 2015 version included the long list of blessings, from grace and mercy to wisdom, love, kindness, humility, peace and prosperity. The message subsequently spread widely online and became one of the actor's best-known motivational speeches.

Why did Denzel Washington ask people to put their slippers under the bed?

At first, the advice sounds almost too simple. But the physical act is the point. By putting the slippers far enough under the bed, a person has to bend down or kneel to retrieve them after waking up. Washington turns that ordinary movement into an intentional moment of prayer.

Instead of immediately reaching for a phone, checking messages or rushing into the day's responsibilities, the first few seconds of the morning become an opportunity to stop and give thanks.

The gesture also creates a literal posture of humility. Getting down on one's knees can traditionally represent prayer and submission to God. Washington uses that familiar image to encourage people to begin the day by acknowledging something bigger than themselves.

The advice is therefore less about where someone keeps their slippers and more about creating a habit that shapes the mindset with which they enter the day.

The blessings Denzel Washington asks people to appreciate

The heart of the quote is the list of things Washington tells people to be thankful for.

He mentions grace, mercy, understanding and wisdom before moving towards parents, love and kindness. He also includes humility, peace and prosperity. The list moves beyond material success. Washington's message places family, character, emotional well-being and spiritual blessings alongside prosperity.

That distinction is important because success is often measured through money, fame, awards or professional achievements. Washington's advice suggests that those things should not become the only markers of a successful life.

Instead, people should first recognise the things that can easily be overlooked, supportive parents, love, kindness, peace and the ability to understand and learn.

What does "thank you in advance for what's already yours" mean?

One of the most memorable parts of the quote comes at the end, when Washington asks people to "Say thank you in advance for what's already yours."

The idea combines gratitude with faith. Rather than waiting for a desired outcome before feeling thankful, the advice encourages people to trust that their lives can move towards something better while appreciating what they already have.

It is also a reminder not to let ambition erase gratitude. Someone can have goals and still be thankful for the present. In Washington's message, faith is not presented as a replacement for hard work but as a way of staying grounded while pursuing success.

For graduates preparing to enter a new phase of life, the message carried an especially clear meaning: achievements may come, setbacks may happen, but the values that keep a person grounded matter throughout the journey.
