Brad Pitt once reflected on the risks of loving deeply and building a family while speaking about Angelina Jolie and their children.

Brad Pitt once offered a candid perspective on happiness, relationships and the risks that come with building a family. In a 2011 interview with Parade, the Hollywood actor said he placed greater importance on being satisfied than constantly chasing happiness. At the time, Pitt spoke warmly about Angelina Jolie and their children, describing family as a deeply rewarding but inherently vulnerable choice. Years later, the couple's relationship and divorce would add a different dimension to those reflections.

Brad Pitt on happiness, family and love

In an interview with Parade in 2011, Brad Pitt was asked whether he considered himself a happy man.Rather than describing happiness as the ultimate goal, Pitt said he placed more emphasis on being a satisfied person. He explained that he believed conflict and challenges were natural parts of life, pushing people towards new stages and directions.

Pitt said he was satisfied with making genuine choices, finding the woman he loved and building a family that meant a great deal to him. It was while discussing his family that he offered his memorable observation that “a family is a risky venture” because the greater the love, the greater the potential loss. For Pitt, loving deeply meant making yourself vulnerable. He described it as putting yourself on the line and accepting the risk as part of the trade-off.

Brad Pitt praised Angelina Jolie as a mother

During the same Parade interview, Pitt was also asked about Angelina Jolie's role as a mother. Pitt described giving his children Jolie as their mother as one of the smartest decisions he had ever made. He praised her as a great mother and said he felt reassured knowing their children were happy, safe and doing well when he was away working. He added that Jolie had the same reassurance when she was working because he would take care of the children.

When asked who disciplined the children, Pitt said that both parents did so when the children were not being respectful. At the time, Pitt and Jolie were raising their six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's relationship

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004. Over the following years, they became one of Hollywood's most closely watched couples. The pair built a family of six children and also became involved in humanitarian work. They eventually married in France in 2014.

Their relationship, however, ended two years later. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 following a private plane dispute involving the family. Although Pitt and Jolie were declared legally single in 2019, disputes over custody and their winery continued for years. Their divorce settlement was finally reached in December 2024.

Brad Pitt's family quote in a different light

The actor's 2011 comments about family being a risk have taken on a different resonance following the couple's long and highly publicised separation. Pitt had spoken about family as something worth taking a risk for because of the depth of love involved. His comments also reflected the vulnerability that comes with allowing relationships and children to become such an important part of one's life.

Years after that interview, the family's circumstances have changed significantly.

Vivienne Jolie takes legal step to drop Pitt surname

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's 18-year-old daughter, Vivienne, has taken another formal step towards legally removing Pitt from her surname. According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Vivienne published a public notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal once a week for four consecutive weeks, from July 24 through August 14. The notice allows anyone opposing her petition to submit a written objection before the final hearing.

Vivienne filed the petition in July, seeking to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. Court documents obtained by Page Six listed “personal” as the reason for the requested change. Her next court hearing is scheduled for November 2. If there is no objection, a judge can approve the requested name change.

The newspaper notice is part of California's legal process for changing a person's name. Pitt's earlier description of family as a risk came at a time when he spoke openly about how much he valued his relationship with Jolie and their children. More than a decade later, the family's story has unfolded in ways that underline the vulnerability he spoke about in that 2011 interview.
