Alexander the Great’s own life was marked by achievements that outlived him. Born in 356 B.C.E. in Pella, Macedonia, he was the son of King Philip II. From a young age, he showed signs of intelligence and curiosity. He was educated in reading, writing and music, and developed a strong interest in learning. His father appointed the famous philosopher Aristotle as his private tutor. Under Aristotle’s guidance for three years, Alexander developed a deep appreciation for science, medicine and botany.

His thirst for knowledge did not fade when he became king. In fact, Alexander reportedly took scientists and botanists along on his military expeditions so they could study the lands he conquered. This combination of military ambition and intellectual curiosity helped shape his legacy.
