Quick facts about heatstroke and measures to prevent it
Heat stroke has killed over a thousand people in India this summer. Delhi has witnessed at least two such deaths so far.

What is heat stroke?
Caused by overheating of the body, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. It can occur if the body temperature rises to 40°C or higher
Who are at risk?
Elderly, children up to 4 years, people with existing medical problems such as heart disease, and people without shelter or access to water coolers and ACs.
How it can kill you
Our body deals with heat by sweating. However, if humidity levels are high, sweat will not evaporate as quickly, preventing the body from releasing heat. It can affect the functioning of the brain and other vital organs leading to death
How to react to heatstroke
Symptoms like rapid pulse, headache, nausea, confusion and unconsciousness. If you see a person with such symptoms, take him/her to a shaded place and try to bring down his body temperature. A good idea could be a cold shower but get medical assistance as soon as possible.
