Project Hail Mary lands on OTT in India
After a strong run in theatres across the world, Project Hail Mary has finally arrived on digital platforms for Indian viewers. But unlike a regular OTT release where subscribers can instantly stream a film as part of their membership, this one comes with a small catch. The film had already created solid buzz internationally and also managed to perform well in India despite competition from several big releases.

Reports suggest the film earned more than $650 million globally, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the year. In India too, the movie pulled audiences to theatres because of its large-scale visuals, emotional story and space survival theme.

The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi adventure is currently available only on rent or purchase basis in India, something that has surprised many fans who were waiting for it to land on streaming after its successful theatrical run.

Where to watch Project Hail Mary in India

Indian viewers can now watch Project Hail Mary on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. However, the movie is not available for free streaming under subscription plans yet.

On Amazon Prime Video, users have to pay Rs. 389 to rent the film. Meanwhile, Apple TV has listed the movie at Rs. 299 for rental and Rs. 599 for purchase.

The digital release reportedly includes several Indian language options as well. Apart from English, the film is available in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, making it easier for audiences across regions to watch the film in their preferred language.

According to reports, the film started rolling out internationally through Video on Demand services from May 12. The release became noticeable after listings appeared on platforms including Apple TV, Prime Video and Google Play in different countries.

There was also discussion around the fact that the film reached digital platforms while it was still running in select cinemas. The makers had even extended its theatrical run earlier after positive audience response, including special IMAX screenings in some regions.

What is Project Hail Mary about?

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, who is also known for writing The Martian.

The story follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone inside a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As his memories slowly return, he realises he has been sent on a dangerous mission connected to the survival of Earth itself.

Humanity is facing a major threat after a mysterious substance begins affecting the sun. During his journey, Ryland encounters an alien creature named Rocky, voiced by James Ortiz. What starts as an unfamiliar and tense meeting slowly turns into an emotional partnership as both try to save their worlds from destruction.

The film also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung and Liz Kingsman.

Even though the film has now reached digital platforms, it is still playing in select theatres in India. Many viewers and critics have pointed out that the film’s scale, visual effects and space sequences are better experienced on the big screen.

The movie received mixed to positive reviews after release, but audiences largely connected with its emotional storytelling and science-heavy survival drama. The bond between Ryland and Rocky especially became one of the most talked-about parts of the film.
