Ghazal Alagh reminded budding entrepreneurs that progress is never linear, but a gradual process.
A start-up founder's journey isn't an easy one. It takes time and patience to turn around every entrepreneur's labour of love.

Ghazal Alagh, the co-founder of MamaEarth, also shares the same belief.

In a detailed post on LinkedIn, the entrepreneur-turned investor reminded budding entrepreneurs that progress is never linear, but a gradual process. "Progress is an everyday effort," she started her post.

Fondly known as Mama Shark from the popular business reality TV show 'Shark Tank India', the 34-year-old said that an entrepreneur is often faced with a number of challenges, one of which is losing hope early on.

Since the expectations don't match the founder's reality, they are left heartbroken, confused and frustrated. "I have seen budding entrepreneurs getting very frustrated, heartbroken and confused when the results of their hard work sometimes don’t align with their expectations," she wrote.

MamaEarth's Chief Mama recommends the best way to deal with this - being consistent. She suggests consistently implementing improvements and never giving up.

"Even the tiniest of improvements, when applied consistently, realise their moment of breakthrough. So don’t give up. It takes vision to stay consistent till you achieve your desired result," she added.

Alagh quoted one of her favourite lines from 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear, “You should be far more concerned with your current trajectory than with your current results.”

With her post, Alagh also shared a graph of how patience and growth go hand-in-hand. It also shows that there might be a phase of high expectations which will lead to disappointment, but every time turns green with time.

For her post, she used hashtags such as #progress, #entrepreneurs #success, #startupinspiration and #breakthrough.

Mamaearth was founded in September 2016 by the investor and her husband Varun Alagh. After four years, the duo founded The Derma Co with an aim to redefine the skincare market to help millennials.

Last month, Alagh hosted Gyaan Day - a one-of-its-kind mentorship programme - for her Shark Tank portfolio. It saw participation from six start-ups from Ghazal’s Shark Tank portfolio namely The Sass Bar, Sunfox Technologies, Gold Safe Solutions Ind, Nomad Food Project, Beyond Water, and Humpy A2.

I found Amazon Unbound by Brad Stone to be a great read. The book talks about the past 10 years of Amazon - their culture, their challenges, and everything it took for them to be where they are. Another book that I recently read is Nehru and Bose: Parallel Lives. It was interesting to read the different perspectives of two such known and admired leaders of the nation.

I recently enjoyed watching The Courier on Prime Video. I loved the storyline and the production. Dominic Cooke did such a great job with the film. When it comes to podcasts, Freakonomics is one of my favorites. I love how informative and diverse their topics of discussion are. I’ve been following the podcast for a decade because of how well made and insightful it is. Definitely recommend this!

I recently completed Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari and would recommend everyone to pick up this great read. You'll be surprised to know so many facts about humankind that you'll be stunned. Harari is the most qualified person living today to tell stories about our world.

Also, although I am not a movie buff, I do recommend The Godfather. It’s essentially the story of a family; it depicts the immigrant experience; it speaks to the history of race relations in America; it discovers universal themes, like the nature of good and evil, justice vs. revenge; and so much more.

My recommendation would be Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is an intriguing book which can be interpreted by different people in different ways.

It made me think a lot especially on the framework of what it means to be productive and happy. Describing flow as a mental and physical state of being where one is completely absorbed and well matched to the task at hand, that everything else disappears from awareness. It explores different facets of being immersed. It’s a higher state of being and working.

I occasionally like watching movies, but I don’t have an absolute favourite. I usually watch action or action-comedy movies, as well as the movies my wife watches. I look at movies from a critical point of view and take down notes of what I learned from them.

I usually share these learnings in the form of Management Training for my subordinates and peers at work. I love the fact that I’m not the one who turns boardrooms into ‘boredrooms’.
