Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, passes away at 99
The palace said that further announcements would be made in due course.
The 99-year-old royal passed away just months before his 100th birthday in June. He had retired from public duties in 2017 at the age of 96.
The Royal Family, in a statement, announced the news, saying, "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
Adding that further announcements would be made in due course.
"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss," the statement concluded.

— The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) 1617966068000The Duke of Edinburgh, born in 1921, had been hospitalised to the private King Edward VII's Hospital in London on Feb. 16, where he was treated for an infection. He was later transferred to a specialized cardiac care hospital, St. Bartholomew's, for a short stay, before returning to King Edward VII's, and being discharged to return home on March 16.

A leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, the former navy commander had been by his wife's side throughout her 69-year reign, the longest in British history, during which time he earned a reputation for a tough, no-nonsense attitude and a propensity for occasional gaffes.
