Murder at Oxford University drags a young Sherlock Holmes into a world of secrets, danger and unlikely friendships. Guy Ritchie's Young Sherlock has gained viewer attention, with one TV expert calling it a series with “zero boring episodes”. The eight-part show on Prime Video also has a South Wales link, with some of the scenes filmed there. The series explores the early life of Sherlock Holmes before he becomes the renowned detective known for solving some of the world’s most challenging cases. Recently, it has garnered attention after TV expert Anubhuti Navin, who manages The Watchlist Club, recommended the show.

What Is Young Sherlock About?

The series features Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, whose life unexpectedly changes when he becomes involved in a murder investigation at Oxford University. During this investigation, Sherlock Holmes encounters James Moriarty, portrayed by Dónal Finn. While Moriarty eventually becomes his greatest adversary, the show explores the early stages of their relationship.

The cast also features Zine Tseng as Xiao Wei, Joseph Fiennes as Sherlock’s father, Silas, and Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge. The story draws inspiration from the novels written by Andy Lane, which focus on Holmes’ early years, and is based on the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Navin described the show as a ‘must-watch’ and ‘an absolute gem.’ She also noted that it is “one of the best series with no boring episodes.” Her review was featured in The Mirror and WalesOnline.

Where Was Young Sherlock Filmed In Wales?

Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff, Monmouth, Bridgend, and Margam Park near Port Talbot are just a few of the South Wales locations where the series was filmed. Filming also happened in Spain and Bristol. The show's period setting is effectively enhanced by these Welsh locations. Ritchie's fast-paced writing style adds to the series' overall plot, which blends elements of mystery, action, and drama.

Guy Ritchie Returns To Sherlock Holmes

Guy Ritchie is best known for films like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He also directed the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Reports say the show has received positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it an 84% and audiences an 83%.
