Preity Zinta has turned her Los Angeles backyard into a little green haven, growing everything from strawberries and apples to tomatoes, herbs and bananas. What began as a lockdown activity with her mother has now become one of the actress's favourite hobbies. Her garden updates show how patience, regular care and a little space can help create a home garden filled with fresh produce.

Preity has been sharing glimpses of her organic home garden on social media for several years. Her backyard in Los Angeles has a mix of fruits, vegetables and herbs, including strawberries, Pink Lady apples, oranges, peaches, guavas, tomatoes, green and red peppers, chillies, eggplant, mint, basil and lemons.

Among the plants that have caught attention is her banana tree. In 2021, Preity showed off a bunch of green bananas growing in her backyard and revealed that she had planted the tree around three years earlier.

The actress celebrated the harvest by talking about banana milkshakes and organic living. She has also encouraged her followers to try “ghar ki kheti”, or home farming, and experience the satisfaction of growing their own food.

Her garden journey began during the pandemic, when she spent more time at home. Preity had planted several trees and plants with her mother during lockdown. What started as a way to stay occupied eventually became a long-term passion.

The actress has previously said that watching her plants grow gave her "a sense of security, happiness and hope" during an uncertain period. She has continued to document the progress of her garden and celebrate every new harvest.

Preity Zinta's banana-growing tip: Give it time

One of the biggest lessons from Preity's banana tree is the importance of patience. The actress waited for around three years before seeing the plant produce a full bunch of bananas.

Second tip was that: Once the banana tree bears fruit, it is cut from the base after harvesting. This allows new shoots to grow from the plant.

While sharing the harvest, Preity said that the experience reminded her that good things take time. She compared growing plants to nurturing anything in life, explaining that a sapling needs consistent love and care before it can grow and produce fruit.

For home gardeners, bananas can therefore require patience rather than quick results. A banana plant needs sufficient sunlight, regular watering and enough space for healthy growth. Good soil and proper drainage are also important because constantly waterlogged soil can damage the roots.

Preity's experience also shows why gardeners should not give up if a fruit plant takes time to produce. Depending on the variety, growing conditions and climate, the waiting period can vary.

From bananas to Pink Lady apples, her garden keeps growing

Preity's backyard is not limited to seasonal vegetables. She has also grown a Pink Lady apple tree, which has a special connection to her Himachali roots.

The actress once joked that while she may have moved away from Himachal, her connection with the place remains. Her apple tree reportedly took about three years to bear fruit. When it finally produced apples, Preity shared her excitement with her followers.

Her mother has also remained an important part of the gardening journey. The two planted different fruits, vegetables and herbs together during the lockdown, turning gardening into a family activity.

Preity has also shared harvests of tomatoes, peppers, chillies and other vegetables from her backyard. She has described the experience of growing her own food as one of the most enjoyable parts of staying home.
