Arjuna winner Prashanti Singh says women sports stars need India Inc support

Singh said it is the lack of recognition for other sports, especially for women, that causes a lack of opportunity.

In a cricket-crazy country like India, it’s not easy being noticed even if you are a star on the basketball court. Arjuna awardee Prashanti Singh wants to change this.

Speaking at an event in Mumbai recently, she said it is the lack of recognition for other sports, especially for women, that causes a lack of opportunity.

“Satnam Singh is the most celebrated Indian basketball player because of the opportunity he got thanks to the NBA. There is a lot of talent here too, but no recognition,” she said.

A domestic league for basketball is something Singh feels will change this.

“Right now, we depend on NBA or Olympics for champions, but we don’t look at domestic players. We have IPL and other league games for men, but there’s nothing for women. Corporations are just not interested and this needs to change,” she said.

“The larger than life television screen is something I just love. We watch live games here, and they play PS4 too. We watch a lot of the earlier games on this big screen. The jerseys here (see pic below) get rotated as we try to mix up the memorabilia. Every time you come here, there’s something new to see. My favourite is the Stephen Curry jersey — the first time he became an all-star.” — Yannick Colaco, Managing Director

“I used to be the national coach of India and visited many of the countries whose flags you see up here. I feel, this gives the space a slight international feel. NBA is going global. My favourites include Mizoram and Iran. I like this area because it’s private, but you still have access to everyone – so you can quickly pop out if you hear something you like. The smaller conference room is also a great place to have a quick meeting.” — Scott Flemming, Head of Basketball Operations

“We call it the bar. It has got a very light air and we usually use this space when we need to brainstorm. It doesn’t feel as formal as a conference room. Often I just bring my laptop here when I have to discuss something with a coworker as this space is neutral. It’s the informal space in this formal setting. We also have breakfast and lunch at the bar.” — Mairu Gupta, Sr Director, Content & Media Distribution
