‘Ponniyin Selvan:1’ mints over Rs 230 cr worldwide in 3 days, cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin calls it a 'compelling watch'

Acclaimed film-maker Mani Ratnam’s latest film, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ seems to be winning over the audiences. The film that boasts of an ensemble cast of Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, has grossed over Rs 230 crore in just three days of its release.

According to noted film trade analyst, Ramesh Bala, the film has grossed over Rs 230 crore at the worldwide box office. Bala took to his Twitter account to make the announcement.
On October 1, the makers of the film announced that it went on to collect Rs 80 crore at the worldwide box-office on day 1. The film earned Rs 70 crore on its second day making it Rs 150 crore in two days.


Film trade experts believe that stellar reviews and positive response from the audience will help the film to have a good run at the box-office. ‘PS:1’ is one of the biggest openers in Tamil cinema in recent times.

The film has been hailed by critics for its accurate adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s eponymous novel published in 1955. It has been appreciated for its performances, visuals, sound design, costumes, and background score. Several theaters across Tamil Nadu witnessed celebrations on the first day of the film’s release.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin took to his Twitter account to heap praise on the epic action film. The cricketer who was visibly impressed by the film hailed Ratnam for his faithful adaptation and the performances in the film.
'PS:1' also stars Parthiban, Sarathkumar, Nasser, Rahman, Prakash Raj, Shobhita Dhulipala, Aishwaarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, and Prabhu in key roles. Academy Award winner AR Rahman has scored the music, while ace cinematographer Ravi Varman has handled the visuals. Besides, the film also has art direction by Thota Tharani, and costumes designed by Eka Lakhani.

Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘PS:1 chronicles the times of Chola Dynasty and the journey of Arunmozhi Varman who goes on to become Emperor Raja Raja Chozhan. The film, which has been shot in two parts, was released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. The second installment of the historic epic drama is expected to be released in 2023.
