‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ crosses Rs 300-cr mark worldwide in 5 days, film poised to become Mani Ratnam's biggest hit

Ratnam’s magnum opus is based on the eponymous 1955 novel by late writer Kalki Krishnamurthy. Various trade sources have confirmed that the film has crossed Rs 300 crore at the worldwide box office, and it has surpassed Rs 100 crore in Tamil Nadu alone.

Considering the massive revenues the film is raking in, film analysts feel that ‘PS:1’ is likely to be the biggest commercial success in Ratnam’s career.
The period drama chronicles the early days of the Chola Emperor Rajaraja I (947 - 1014). The film which is made in two parts is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 500 crore. The principal photography of the film began on December 11, 2019. The entire film was made in a span of 150 days.
The film also marks the fourth collaboration between former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Mani Ratnam. Bachchan made her debut with Ratnam’s 1997 political drama ‘Iruvar’ opposite Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.
