Telegram channels dedicated to Sacred Games season 2 pirated content have thousands of members.
BENGALURU: 'Sacred Games', the highly acclaimed first original Indian series by Netflix, which returned to subscriber screens on Wednesday night, is finding its thunder stolen by rampant piracy.
Pirated videos of the muchawaited Season 2 of the hit series are already available on messaging app Telegram and multiple websites on the Internet. While some of these websites are known for phishing and spreading malware, the Telegram channels dedicated to Sacred Games season 2 pirated content have thousands of members, according to a review by ET.
Separately, the Internet and Mobile Association of India and Alliance (IAMAI) is in talks to work with Maharashtra Cyber Digital Crime Unit (MCDCU) to seek their help in bringing down pirated content of their members that include Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee5 and Alt Balaji.
IAMAI president Subho Ray told ET that the industry association is in the process of submitting a proposal. Netflix declined to comment on ET’s queries on piracy.
Industry body working with police to tackle the illegal copy of 'Sacred Games 2' available online. Formed in 2017, MCDCU is a specialised enforcement solution in association with industry stakeholders such as Star India, Viacom 18, Sony, Motion Picture Association, India office and Indian Music Industry to proactively tackle web infringements.

It has brought down more than 300 websites and stopped 236 million hits per month till date.
Rampant piracy is driven by the fact that viewers can access alternatives other than paid content with no loss in experience or quality, said analysts. A study by industry group IA FICCI and consultancy EY in March 2018 estimated that the film sector alone loses $2.8 billion of its total revenue to online piracy.
Last year, within a week of its debut on Netflix, Sacred Games was available for free on several websites. The show, which stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan, has won plaudits for its brilliant script and acting.
Mini Gupta, partner at EY, is of the view that streaming platforms should strengthen their digital supply chains to curb piracy.

“According to our research, people who are consuming pirated content of these streaming platforms are the ones living in tier 1 and urban cities. Affordability of subscription isn't an issue for them. They do it because they get a high by consuming free content,” she said.
