Phony OTT release: When and where to watch Sam Nivola and Connie Britton’s mystery series in the US and Canada; check streaming details

What if the one you trust the most suddenly doesn’t feel like your mother anymore? That troubling question is at the centre of Phony, a new mystery series starring Sam Nivola and Connie Britton. The series centres on a teenager who starts to believe his mother has been replaced by an imposter, combining psychological suspense, dark humour and the struggles of adolescence. The series will premiere October 20, 2026, with two episodes on Hulu in the U.S. Here’s what viewers need to know about its story, cast and streaming availability across the US, Canada and India.

When is Phony releasing on OTT?

Created by Nick Paley, known for his work on Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Phony centres on Sonny Cooke, played by Nivola. After a car accident leaves him in hospital, Sonny wakes up convinced that the woman claiming to be his mother, Ellen, is not the person he remembers. Britton plays Ellen, who is both Sonny’s mother and the principal of his high school. The mystery deepens when Sonny realises that nobody around him believes his account of the apparent change. As he tries to uncover the truth, he must also navigate adolescence, friendships and an increasingly complicated relationship with his mother. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Paley described the show as a blend of mystery, comedy and drama, focusing on a complicated relationship between a mother and her teenage son.

Who stars in Phony?

Alongside Nivola and Britton, the cast includes Grace Brennan, Maliq Johnson and Meera Syal. The series combines an unusual mystery with a coming-of-age story, exploring how a teenager’s understanding of his family changes as he grows older. Samn Nivola previously attracted attention for his performance in the third season of The White Lotus, while Britton is known for series including Friday Night Lights, Nashville, and The White Lotus.

When and where can you watch Phony in the US, Canada and India?

Phony premieres on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, on Hulu, with its first two episodes arriving together. New episodes are scheduled to follow weekly. Subscribers to eligible Disney+ bundles can also access Hulu content through Disney+. In Canada, viewers should check local Disney+ listings for confirmed availability and release timing. In India, no local streaming platform had announced a release date at the time of writing. The US premiere date does not automatically mean the series will be available in either market on the same day.

Why Phony could interest mystery fans?

Rather than relying solely on whether Sonny’s mother has been replaced, Phony also explores trust, identity and the uneasy transition from childhood to adulthood. Its mix of family drama, unsettling mystery and dark humour gives the story room to develop beyond its central premise. For viewers looking for a new suspense series this October, Phony offers an intriguing starting point. The bigger question is whether Sonny can prove what he believes or whether the truth is more complicated than he imagines.
