PETA India slams Amul for creative on Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar speech, says ‘the joke’s on you’

All’s not well between PETA India and Amul.

The artwork shows the Amul girl, feeding Amul butter to Joaquin Phoenix who is dressed as Joker.
If there’s anything Amul India is known for, more than their famous tagline ‘Utterly, Butterly, Delicious’, it’s their topical artworks. The creative team at Amul is often lauded by the netizens for coming up with sometimes thought-provoking, mostly hilarious artwork which perfectly sum up the happenings around the world. However, Amul’s latest creation, which celebrates Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar speech, has been slammed by PETA India.

After the 92nd annual Academy Awards, Amul India shared an artwork on their official Twitter handle. The artwork shows the Amul girl, feeding Amul butter to Joaquin Phoenix who is dressed as Joker.

PETA India was quick to call out Amul for their rather tone deaf artwork. “The joke's on you,” read the tweet. PETA India argued that in his Oscar speech, the ‘Joker’ actor had spoken against dairy cruelty.

“Do the cows a favour and switch to making soya, almond, oat or other plant milk,” the tweet read.

Netizens were in no mood to spare Amul for their artwork. This netizen called the cartoon ‘disrespectful and distasteful’.

Several other Twitter users called our Amul for their rather hypocritical stance.

This netizen felt that shoving butter into Joaquin Phoenix’s face, who happens to be a vegan and a lifetime activist, was disrespectful.

For the uninitiated, Phoenix had won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the film ‘Joker’. During his speech, Phoenix had addressed a plethora of issues, ranging from racism to gender inequality and the cancel culture.

"I think we've become very disconnected from the natural world. Many of us are guilty of an egocentric worldview, and we believe that we're the centre of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable," Phoenix had said in his Oscar speech.
