Dubai-based Abdulla Ajmal can smell the story behind a watch from a mile away. For Ajmal, a consulting perfumer with Ajmal perfumes, luxury watches are what gets him ticking. They are rewards he buys himself for achieving milestones.

"I have about 30 in my collection so far, but the watch closest to my heart is a Cartier entry-level piece. It's extra special because it was the first watch I bought with my own hard-earned money," says the 44-year-old perfumer.

What gets him ticking about timepieces is not just their mechanics, but also their stories. He says, "Every watch has a story. Technicalities aside, it helps if there is an intrigue factor to a watch.".
