Feridia Rojas surprised the neighbours in her Havana suburb when she went shopping in the midst of the pandemic. That the coronavirus is particularly deadly to seniors or that personal protective equipment (PPEs) were not available in stores did not deter the 82-yearold. The retired nurse fished out a cardboard box from a pharmacy and used it to make a full-body shield. To add a dash of humour, she painted on her protective wear: “I am at home, what about you?”

Many designers have started working on such “isolation units”. Milan-based Design Libero’s Bubble Shield has a solar-powered fan to purify the air inside it. Just zip the shield up and you are ready to go.

… that is what Chinese architect Sun Dayong is calling his body shield concept that uses UV lights to sterilise itself. It is made using carbon fibre, is foldable and can be worn like a backpack.
