The streaming rights for Pennum Porattum have been acquired by Netflix, and the film will begin streaming on March 13, 2026.The announcement was shared on the platform’s social media handles, confirming both the release date and the languages in which the film will be available. Along with the update, the team wrote:
“Eeh gramathilu oru cheriya rumour kittiya mathi, naattukaar motham hunting mode aavan. (In this village, just a small rumour is enough for the whole place to go into hunting mode.) Watch Pennum Porattum on Netflix, out March 13, in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.”
With this multilingual release, the film will reach viewers not only in Malayalam but also in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, expanding its accessibility beyond Kerala.
Interestingly, the OTT deal for the film had already been secured before its theatrical release in February. Such pre-release digital agreements have become relatively rare in recent years for Malayalam films, making this aspect of the project notable.
Story explores rumours, morality and village life
Set in the fictional village of Pattada, Pennum Porattum centres on how quickly rumours can spread and influence collective behaviour in small communities. What begins as gossip gradually escalates into chaos, exposing how fear and moral judgement can drive people to extreme actions. The narrative follows characters including Gopalan Master, Charulatha and a Dalmatian dog named Suttu. As rumours begin to spiral, two groups in the village start chasing Charulatha and the dog, turning the situation into a frantic pursuit.
Through these events, the film explores themes such as mob justice, moral policing and the pressure to conform within tightly knit societies. It highlights how individuals who do not fit the expectations of the community often face suspicion and hostility. While one character attempts to escape the suffocating environment in search of freedom, another remains caught within the same cycle of judgment.
Adding an unusual layer to the storytelling, parts of the narrative are presented from the perspective of the Dalmatian Suttu. Actor Tovino Thomas lends his voice to the character, offering a distinctive viewpoint on the unfolding events.
Cast and crew behind the film
The film features a mix of experienced performers and newcomers, with actors including Raina Radhakrishnan, Rajesh Madhavan, Subhash Chandran, Shanooj Alanallur, Satheesh Pulikka, Dinesh Pe Po, Varsha Valsan, Manoj Kumar N and Akshaya Vijayakumar appearing in key roles. The screenplay was written by PT Ravi Sankar. Cinematography was handled by Sabin Uralikandy, while editing duties were managed by Chaman Chakko. The music and background score for the film were composed by Dawn Vincent.
Pennum Porattum was produced by Santhosh T. Kuruvilla under the banner of STK Frames, in association with Binu George Alexander and Sherin Rachel Santhosh.
Another notable aspect of the film is its casting approach. Several performers were newcomers selected from villages in the Palakkad region, where much of the film was shot, adding authenticity to the rural setting.
