Painter Raja Ravi Varma's Radha up for sale, estimated to fetch Rs 8-10 crores

For the discerning collector, there is no greater thrill than a chance to own a canvas by Raja Ravi Varma. But this opportunity comes up rarely, and when it does, it’s only for those with serious deep pockets. Later this month, all eyes will be on an oil on canvas by the painter, going under the hammer at Pundole’s art auction in Mumbai. The work, titled ‘Radha in the moonlight’ carries a price estimate of Rs 8-12 crore.

Painted in 1890, it was first owned by Shungrasoobyer Avergal, the former Dewan of Travancore, and later by his descendants. From there, the work made its way into a private collection and is now ready for its new owner. Interested bidders can start checking their bank balance.
