Oust mental blocks with this game

Art meets science in this set of nesting hand-painted blocks designed by James Paulius.

Budding town planners and miniarchitecture aficionados should enjoy sitting down to get handsy with these Blockitecture sets from Areaware. Lest you think they’re easily stacked, the pine pieces aren’t actually perfect squares; the different angles make for a fun, Jenga-like assembly of make-believe city-blocks. Art meets science in this set of nesting hand-painted blocks designed by James Paulius.

The designer’s intent was to create a timeless toy that challenges the user’s creativity and understanding of physical laws. The 5 x 5 x 5 inches blocks are made using New Zealand pine wood. The Blockitecture was awarded the first place in the RIT Metaproject 03 design competition.

These solid shapes are about as simple as it gets when it comes to toys, and the color scheme and geometric, window-lined facades are so attractive that you wouldn’t mind lining these up on a shelf for a little absent-minded fumbling when it’s time for a mid-day brainescape.
