Sean Baker’s latest triumph, Anora, has been turning heads since its Cannes premiere, and now audiences can finally experience it from the comfort of home. The 2024 romantic comedy-drama blends razor-sharp storytelling with heart-wrenching performances, making it a standout in modern cinema. After a glittering theatrical run and sweeping the 97th Academy Awards, the film is poised to reach an even wider audience on Netflix, giving fans a chance to witness its unique mix of glamour, grit, and emotion.

Anora stars Mikey Madison as Anora "Ani" Mikheeva, a lap dancer from New York whose life takes an unexpected turn when she marries Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov, the wealthy son of a Russian oligarch, played by Mark Eydelshteyn. The supporting cast includes Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Darya Ekamasova, and Aleksei Serebryakov, each bringing depth and nuance to the story’s high-stakes drama. The movie will stream on Netflix from March 17.

After premiering at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2024, Anora received critical acclaim, winning the prestigious Palme d'Or. Its theatrical release on October 18, 2024, further cemented its status, garnering recognition from the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute as one of the top ten films of the year. At the 97th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for six awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Madison, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing, showcasing Baker’s distinctive vision and the cast’s remarkable performances.

The movie follows Ani, a 23-year-old stripper from Brighton Beach, as she becomes entwined with Vanya, a 21-year-old heir to a Russian oligarch’s fortune. Hired for a week-long romance, Ani indulges in a whirlwind of luxury, including a Las Vegas trip, and impulsively marries Vanya. When his parents intervene, sending henchmen to annul the marriage and confiscate Ani’s ring, she faces the pressure of money and familial power. Despite their love, Ani recognises Vanya’s immaturity and the weight of his family’s influence, ultimately signing the annulment papers. Back in New York, Ani collects her belongings, confronts Igor about past threats, and emotionally breaks down, reclaiming her autonomy and confronting the reality of the betrayal.
